Ducati Preferred Stoner Over Rossi
Despite the travails over his mysterious 3 race hiatus in 2009, Ducati were desperate to resign Casey Stoner to their MotoGP effort offering him a contract extension in November 2009 that he ultimately rejected.
The contrast between Valentino Rossi's pre-season test program to date and that of former Ducati pilot Casey Stoner couldn't be more stark. Rossi has struggled (albeit at least in part due to injury) from the get go managing to post only the 15th and 11th fastest times in the 2 tests so far, whereas Stoner has been immediately on the pace over at HRC on the factory Honda. Stoner was fastest at Valencia and 3rd at Sepang although just 5/100ths of a second behind leader Marco Simoncelli.
Stoner gave Ducati a stunning 2007 World Championship in his debut season on the bike and although he struggled with consistency in the last 3 years still won a total of 23 victories for Bologna![]()
